Qur’an Folio
  • Accession Number:AKM482
  • Place:North Africa
  • Dimensions:23.8 x 33.5 cm
  • Date:10th century
  • Materials and Technique:Ink and gold on parchment

This elegant folio is from a dispersed Qur’an manuscript that must have been magnificent to see and costly to produce. Each side of the parchment has three lines only, suggesting that the complete manuscript was enormous. The text is written in a Kufic script with distinctive features such as the emphasis on the vertical letters and the swooping tails of the final curved letters that later became a hallmark of the maghribi script known from Spain and North and West Africa. The red and green dots in the text are early examples of vocalization markers, mostly indicating hamzas and long vowels. The end of each verse is signified by six gold dots in the form of a triangle, with each fifth verse marked by a decorative circle.
