Don’t miss this immersive performance built on a long-time collaboration between acclaimed Montreal-based musical ensemble, Constantinople and Ablaye Cissoko, a Senegalese griot, master musician, singer, and composer.

Over the course of their twenty-year history, Constantinople has created more than 40 new works, travelled to nearly 125 cities in 25 countries, and explored a wide range of musical avenues: from mediaeval manuscripts to contemporary aesthetics; from Mediterranean Europe to Eastern traditions and New World Baroque.

Like the group’s ancient namesake city, the group bridges not only East and West, but also unites various traditions and special guests from across the globe.

Beginning with the October, 2017 performance of Under the Syrian Musical Sky, Constantinople’s collaborative series continues in the wake of a year of national reflection, celebration, and dialogue. With three performances in 2018, the series falls under the banner of our Conversation Nation series of performances — linked thematically with our HERE exhibition — showcasing the myriad ways cultures communicate through the performing arts with a range of Canadian artists engaged in work that challenges, compels, and captivates.

With:
Ablaye Cissoko, kora and voice
Kiya Tabassian, setar and voice
Pierre-Yves Martel, viola da gamba
Patrick Graham, percussion
