The Museum’s fifth annual lecture celebrates the world-shaping stories of Africa as we welcome to our stage Deborah Ahenkorah, a Ghanaian social entrepreneur and activist – and one of the winners of the 2019 Global Pluralism Award, which recognizes pluralism in action.
Join us for an inspiring afternoon as Ahenkorah, co-founder and CEO of Golden Baobab, a social enterprise that aims to promote African literature for children, talks about her groundbreaking work making space for African stories to be told and read. She’ll share insights from her experience supporting African writers and illustrators and publishing children’s books from across the African continent. She’ll touch on the connections between children’s books and a host of issues, especially literacy, diversity, and representation. And she’ll show us the power of books to change minds.
Bio:
Deborah Ahenkorah started her first education organization, Project Educate In Africa, as a teenager, and has spent the past 10 years exploring solutions for eradicating childhood literacy challenges in Africa. As well as Golden Baobab, she founded the children's publishing house African Bureau Stories. She has been nominated by the African Leadership Network for Best Social Entrepreneur in Africa, recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Global Shaper, and granted fellowships with the Aspen Institute and Echoing Green. Her work has been featured in major international media, including the New York Times, BBC, and France 24. The Global Pluralism Award, for which she is nominated in 2019, is given by the Global Centre for Pluralism to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of organizations, individuals, and governments who are tackling the challenge of living peacefully and productively with diversity.
