Embark on an immersive musical expedition through the mesmerizing realm of maqam, retracing the maqamat that Yusuf Omar — one of the most distinguished Iraqi maqam reciters of all time — once masterfully brought to life. In this commemorative performance, presented as part of the Iraqi Festival of Toronto, Iraq Idol finalist Mohammad Sajad will perform a diverse array of maqamat, each intricately weaving narratives of sentiments, cultural richness, and time-honoured heritage.
Mohammad Sajad studied at the Institute of Musical Studies in Baghdad, specializing in Iraqi maqam and traditional musical instruments. A member of the National Ensemble of Iraqi Musical Heritage, Sajad teaches Iraqi maqam at the Shaghaf Institute for teaching music. He was the youngest jury member at the maqam contest in Anbar, Iraq in 2019 and in 2021, Mohammad Sajad was one of three finalists in Iraq Idol.
