Create unique and colourful designs on fabric using a wax and dye technique with artist Deon Best. Modern Batik revolutionizes the traditional artform, making it possible to enhance detail and create painterly designs that will surprise you with their texture and tone.

Batik is a resistance dyeing technique often linked with the island of Java in Indonesia, where the form was taken to great heights. Samples from past centuries have also been found around the world, and when it was introduced in Uganda in the 1960’s the artform was also refined, comparable to the intricate batik of Java.

This workshop does not require experience and is open to youth and adults. It’s part of our fall season —Africa! — which explores new dimensions of the vast and complex continent with a world-class lineup of art, performers, and speakers.
