Experience a trio of Madagascar’s musical stars as they reimagine the country’s traditional music in a captivating performance, launching our 2019/20 season, Listening to Each Other. Toko Telo features one of the world’s pre-eminent guitarists, D’Gary, who weaves his instrumental wizardry into the soulful vocals of national diva, Monika Njava, and the exquisite artistry of guitarist Joël Rabesolo.
You won’t want to miss this supergroup’s vibrant musicianship and entrancing compositions, inspired by the rich musical traditions of the island’s southwestern region — an area where the Malagasy culture has long mixed with Indian and Arabic cultures, as well as that of the Swahili coast, sparking an irresistible sound.
Opening the evening is Toronto-based acoustic guitarist Maneli Jamal, who has wowed audiences around the world with his nuanced compositions.
This event is part of our 2019/20 Performing Arts season, Listening to Each Other, which pays tribute to the role of the performative arts in connecting communities, preserving culture, and spurring social change. It’s also part of our fall season —Africa! — which explores new dimensions of the vast and complex continent with a world-class lineup of art, performers, and speakers.
