  • Ottoman emperor Sultan Murad III (r. 1574–95) commissioned this unique manuscript, which relates various tales of the lovers Shah Ramin, son and heir of King Ardashir, and Mah-Pervin, daughter of the King’s vizier.

During his mission to return Shah Ramin (who was placed in a chest) to Baghdad, the courtier fell asleep under the shade of a tree, only to wake up and find that the camel and the chest—with the prince inside—had been looted!
